What is your only comfort in life and in death?
That I am not my own, but belong body and soul, in life and in death, to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ.  He has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil.  He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact all things must work together for my salvation.  Because I belong to Him, Christ, by His Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for Him.

What does God’s law require of us?
Christ teaches us this in summary in Matthew 22 –
Love the Lord you God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your mind
and with all your strength.
This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it:

Eternal God, in all times and places you have provided your church with
individuals who have been used to point others to you.  We are grateful for the testimony of the great cloud of witnesses who surround your throne –
for the apostles and first believers…
for those in the early church…
for the martyrs of all ages…
for those who have reformed the church in every age…
for those who have ministered to us.
For these great examples of the faith we give you praise.
As we join this communion of saints,
we pray that we too may be worthy witness for you
in our care of creation…
in our interaction with people of other nations and ethnicities…
in our respect for those in authority…
in our care for those in our broader community…
in our support of Christians around the world…
in our daily lives of ministry…
as we support persons with particular needs.
In all this we look forward to the day when we will join those who have gone before us in praising you, the one eternal God, forever and ever.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Our worship today is led by the Rev. Hank Vlaardingerbroek, recently retired from full-time pastoral work in Michigan and a former pastor in East Palmyra, NY.  Pastor Hank is also a brother-in-law to Harry and Marilyn Myers.  Let’s welcome him warmly to Valley Church as he brings us God’s Word.

A group from Valley Church will be attending the Leadership Summit in Syracuse this Thursday and Friday.  Pray for safe travel and for encouragement and an openness to new ideas as they attend.

You are invited to the Children’s Home 52nd annual ice cream social on Tuesday, August 10 from 5-8 PM at the Hillcrest campus, 1182 Chenango St.  Enjoy homemade cake, ice cream, music and activities for the whole family.  Tickets are just $3.00 each, with hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers and beverages available for extra cost.

MORNING WORSHIP: 10:00 AM  Pastor Gelder is back and will begin a new segment of the series for “Ordinary Time”.  The August messages will be focused on “Family Time”, this week reflecting on “Vacations”, based on Mark 6:30-31.

Also, we will welcome back to Valley Church the Howard Van Dam family.  They will be returning as a family to Haiti on August 10 and we will again commission them for continuing service there.  Plan to stay following the service for a pot luck meal where you can interact in more depth with them.  Also, the second offering will be for their support through CR World Missions.  Be generous and bless them this way as they return.
